Food Security Research Institute


Food Security is important and refers to the availability of food and one’s access to it. This definition may have been developed at the convenience of policymakers elsewhere. Food sovereignty is part of the culture change that we need. It refers to a policy framework advocated by a number of farmers, peasants, fisher folk, indigenous peoples, women, rural youth and environmental organizations, namely the “right” of people to define their own food, agriculture, livestock and fisheries systems, in contrast to having food largely subject to international market forces.

The relationship between food security and national security is significant. There are currently 60 countries in the world ranked as having an “Extreme” or “High Risk” of food-related insecurity, with the majority of these countries located in underdeveloped regions where economic and political breakdown is advanced. Most recently, food insecurity has been identified as a contributory factor to the uprisings that have swept across the Middle East and North Africa.

Sustainable development of the agriculture sector should, however, be supported. Sustainable agriculture is a means of producing food that is healthy for consumers and animals, environmentally friendly, supportive of workers who maintain the food basket through fair wages and working conditions, respects animals and proper breeding practices and supports and enhances rural communities. In securing food for our nation, we would then be developing “Agriculture Now” and for future generations.


For this purpose we established the “Food Security Research Institute of IAU".


The following description is presented for the introduction of Food Security Research Institute (FSRI):


  1. The institute is comprised of following research departments:


  1. Inactive food defense threats:

Forecasting the types of domestic and foreign threats to strategic food and agriculture.


  1. Crops cultivar pattern of agricultural farms:

Presentation based on sustainable agriculture development in accordance with topography and climatic zonation, land use and capabilities of each region in order to reduce production costs and optimize water resources utilization.


  1. Land management and management of environmentally sustainable agriculture:

Provide adequate and healthy food for the population's food needs and achieve an optimal production pattern with drought management, flood, storm and climate change to prevent agricultural production potential reduction.


  1. Research on the production and processing of strategic products:

Reduce imports of essential strategic products by increasing production from domestic sources and based on sustainable agricultural principles.


  1. New technologies in agriculture and food industry:

Quantitative and qualitative development of information, communications, satellites, virtual training and...


  1. Food processing and processing of agricultural and animal products:

Quality control and providing ways to improve the production and processing of healthy food.


  1. Food safety:

Standard tests to verify the quality of agricultural, food and processed products.


  1. Agricultural and livestock products:

Future prospects the need for increased yield and quality of products per unit area.


  1. Management of pests, diseases and weeds:

Providing a solution to the problems of pests, diseases and weeds in  sustainable agriculture.


  1. Plant Nanotechnology:

Reduces inputs and increases their efficiency.


  1. Plant Nutrition and Fertilizers:

Soil improvement in order to increase quantitative and qualitative yields by focusing on strategic products.


  1. Seed and Plant Seedlings Research:

Seed and Plant Seedlings with High Genetic Purity Based on Native Germplasm


  1. Animal and poultry feed:

Production and supply of feed for livestock and poultry, based on domestic production.


  1. Marketing and trade of agricultural products and food:

Improving the position of Iran in the production and trading of agricultural products in the world by improving the quality of products and increasing competitiveness in regional and global markets:


  1. Water and Irrigation Management:

Completion of infrastructure and technical irrigation facilities supplementing national investment projects and development of research and improvement process for the promotion and education of scientific principles of water productivity, emphasizing the traditional and native irrigation background in Iran.


  1. Rural development:

Principle exploitation and preservation and revitalization of basic production resources, including soil and water, which is a function of villagers.




  1. We are also planning in this institute targeted guidance, application-oriented and qualitative & quantitative improvement of research projects and MSc. & Ph.D. theses.
